Challenge-Based Learning - What is it ???
Even after countless educational measures, achievement for American students has not improved, while students in other nations enjoy rising test scores and better preparation for a global workforce. Students see the important events taking place in the world, and they understand that there are real problems that need to be solved. At the same time, these students do not feel school is preparing them to address these important challenges. Our education curriculum presents students with assignments that lack real world relevance. Many students either learn to do just enough to get by or they lose interest and drop out. There is a metaphoric barrier that exists between the classroom and the real world, which makes a strong case for a new approach in our classrooms. It is clear that something has to change.
Challenge Based Learning is a multidisciplinary approach that encourages students to use technology already used in their daily lives to solve real world problems. Challenge Based Learning applies what is known about the present-day learning styles of secondary education students and puts to use available technologies that allow authentic learning experiences that challenge students to make a difference, taking down that barrier between the traditional classroom and the real world.
From Apple Inc: "Challenge Based Learning is collaborative and hands-on, asking students to work with other students, their teachers, and experts in their communities and around the world to develop deeper knowledge of the subjects students are studying, accept and solve challenges, take action, share their experience, and enter into a global discussion about important issues."
** Below is a CBL framework that I developed to use in my own classroom. I adopted it from Apple Inc.
- It is not meant to be used linearly, but has multiple points of entry and multiple solutions.
